Welcome to my studio practice focused on video design, with expertise in live video systems, production, direction, editing, creative code, and installations.
Based in Boston, Johnny DeKam received his MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute‘s iEAR program & founded the software company VIDVOX. His software has become a leading tool for artists, designers and VJs to create live visuals and immersive environments.
Throughout his career Johnny has moved fluidly between contexts; designing and directing video for major concert tours, collaborating with artists on museum exhibitions, performing solo live cinema and coding artistic software applications.
Johnny has taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Pratt Institute of Art, Ecole Des Beaux Art, Renne, France, Hangar.org Barcelona, and Hyperwerk Institute for Post Industrial Design, Basel, Switzlerland
He has collaborated with artists, composers, theater companies, opera singers and musicians including Alvin Lucier, ETHEL String Quartet, Sasha & Digweed, FUN, Dream Theater, Brian Sacawa, Leslie Hewitt, Irina Nahkova, Thomas Dolby and Ken Ueno.
As a designer at The Elumenati, a firm creating innovative solutions for immersive visualization, their clients included: nVidia, Hewlett Packard, Cirque du Soliel and NASA. He has collaborated on the design of interactive audio-visual exhibitions at Williams College Museum of Art, The Exploratorium, The Menil Collection, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany, the MCA Chicago and the Sculpture Centre in New York City.
Johnny has performed in front of live audiences in over 36 countries in a variety of contexts, including New York Film & Video Festival, MUTEK, Transmediale, MUTEK, The Kitchen, Coachella, Museum of Contemporary Art Houston, MACBA Barcelona, Sonic Acts Amsterdam, V2 Rotterdam, Society for Arts & Technology (SAT) Montreal, The American Museum of the Moving Image, and Kiasma Helsinki.
